Inspired by the kūtai (shellfish), this flat interpretation offers a more minimal, contemporary take on a form deeply connected to the rhythms of the sea. Carved from Kahurangi pounamu, the piece carries a quiet strength — its smooth surface and softened edges reflecting both the natural shell and the enduring relationship between people and the moana.

Rooted in the practice of mātaitai, the design speaks to the balance of taking and giving, and the importance of sustaining both resource and knowledge across generations.
