Kōkōwai Sconce Light

$750.00

DSC03268 Large 2 copy

The Kōkōwai Sconce Light is a bold but grounding piece to bring the warmth of whenua to your whare. The red colour is a Kōkōwai slip that has been applied to stoneware before firing.

This piece is part of the Te Ao Marama realm of a body of works called Earthly Delights.
"Earthly delights is a body of work that looks to focus the narrative of clay to the whenua in Aotearoa. It traces the whakapapa of clay, beginning with the realm of Te Kore; an expansive void of potential, through Te Pō; the perpetual darkness, and arriving at Te Ao Mārama, the world of light we experience today.

Te Ao Mārama is the world we know today, the world of light. One of the key pigments used in this series is kōkōwai, a pigment of great significance in Te Ao Māori. Its deep red colour symbolises when blood was spilt during the separation of Ranginui and Papatūānuku by their children. This separation is what moved us from the darkness of Te Pō, to the light of Te Ao Mārama. Soon after, red clay was used by Tāne Mahuta to form Hineahuone, the first woman and the first of human life in Te Ao. Traditionally, kōkōwai was used to paint people, objects and places to embellish them or render them as sacred. Many hours were spent harvesting, processing and trading kōkōwai."

Designed to be hardwired in & hung flush against wall. Visible cord is for display purpose only. Bulb included.
40cm across, 11cm deep.
