Tiamāni "Moana" Collection – Kukupara (Black Mussel) Earrings
By Sina Potaka | Handmade in Aotearoa | Sea & Forest United

The Kukupara (Black Mussel) earrings are a new addition to the Tiamāni "Moana" Collection. Ethically sourced from the coastlines of Aotearoa. Each shell carries an elegant curve sculptured by the sea, holding rare fragments of Kapia (Kauri Gum) that create a beautiful unity of sea and forest.

The ātaahua (beautiful) kapia is emphasised with a gold gilt undertone, while the barnacles are sanded smooth and the shell is resin washed for strength. This process provides a high-gloss finish that highlights a deep black exterior with subtle hints of natural blue and purple, a colour palette as rich as the moana itself.

The Story Behind The Shell

The little black mussel works in collective groups as they cling to shoreline rocks. They band together, providing strength in numbers against the battering waves of the sea.

"Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari taku toa he toa takitini – My strength is not that of one, but of many."

The Intention Behind the Design

Like a mussel clinging to the rock, like a Kauri tree standing firm, hold true to your space and don't be deterred by the challenging, crashing waves of life.
