Hei Tiki Hauora

The Hei Tiki Hauora by Messini Palace is a contemporary expression of one of the most recognisable forms in te ao Māori. Reimagined through bold colour and sculptural clarity, each piece carries a sense of balance, wellbeing, and connection — reflecting the concept of hauora, the holistic state of health across body, mind, spirit, and whānau.

Form and Meaning

This work honours the enduring presence of the hei tiki within Māori visual culture, while allowing space for a modern interpretation. The defined lines, softened curves, and inlaid pāua details draw the eye into the piece, creating a quiet dialogue between tradition and contemporary practice. It is a form that speaks to continuity — of identity, of whakapapa, and of living culture.

Material and Craft

Each piece is formed using a moulded ceramic process, allowing for consistency in shape while retaining a strong sculptural presence. Finished by hand, the surface holds a smooth, tactile quality, with colour applied to enhance depth and form.

Pāua shell inlays introduce natural iridescence, catching light and bringing movement to the expression.
