Tusiata o le Tala o le Vavau pays tribute to pioneering Samoan artist Iosua To‘afa, illustrator of the iconic 1976 Tala o le Vavau: Myths and Legends of Samoa. Through reflections from Albert Wendt, Momoe Malietoa von Reiche, Sean Mallon, Marilyn Kohlhase and others close to To‘afa, it offers a moving, personal account of his life and lasting influence. The book and its accompanying exhibition also present new works by nine Aotearoa-based Samoan artists—both established and emerging—who draw inspiration from To‘afa and the original 1976 publication. Altogether, Tusiata o le Tala o le Vavau celebrates contemporary Samoan art and honours its foundations in To‘afa’s groundbreaking work.
