Wheku Tahi - Neon Orange
$550.00
Discover this exquisite Neon Orange Wheku Tahi ceramic casting by renowned Māori artist Messini Palace here at Oyster & Moon.
Ancestral Guardian Reimagined
This striking contemporary interpretation of a traditional Wheku—a carved face representing important tūpuna (ancestors) or kaitiaki (guardians)—merges centuries-old Toi Māori techniques with modern ceramic casting artistry. Traditionally positioned at the apex of meeting house gables to watch over gatherings, each Wheku features the distinctive Pukana (protruding tongue), an expression conveying profound emotion in waiata and kapa haka performances.
Meticulous Craftsmanship
Each piece begins as a ceramic casting of an original carving commissioned from Master Carver Michael Matchitt. Palace then applies four meticulous coats of paint before carefully inserting authentic paua shell inlay eyes, creating a striking contrast that brings the guardian figure to life. This labour-intensive process spans five days, ensuring every piece in this limited collection possesses its own unique character and energy.
Bold Cultural Statement
Palace's distinctive artistic approach bridges traditional whakairo rakau (wood carving) with contemporary mediums and vibrant color palettes. This Wheku embodies her artistic journey of cultural reconnection, making it both a powerful decorative element and a meaningful taonga for collectors who appreciate indigenous art that honors tradition while embracing innovation.
Dimensions: 150mm (W) x 260mm (H)
Each Wheku Tahi is handcrafted in Messini Palace's Auckland studio.
