Ulu

'Ulu' is the Samoan translation for head. 

Ulu is one of the five designs featured in the 'Tino/Body' series, showcasing motifs that are prominent throughout the Pacific, particularly in Samoa. A series I created to symbolise the strength and significance of various body parts.

This design represents the head, one of the most sacred parts of our body. It also symbolizes the 'head' of a family, embodying leadership and responsibility. The motifs symbolize various aspects of Pacific wisdom and identity, reflecting how the head encompasses our intellectual and spiritual core. Just as the head is central to our thoughts and emotions, this design conveys the essence of our Pacific heritage and ancestral knowledge.
